Rabbits can be a wonderful addition to your family. They’re friendly, fun to cuddle with and can be easy to look after, if you know how to take care of a rabbit. Today we’ll be looking at some basic tips that you can follow to make sure that your pet rabbit is living a happy and healthy life.
The most important thing to consider when raising a pet rabbit is where it’s going to live. If you plan to keep the rabbit inside your house, any typical rabbit cage will do since it won’t be affected by the weather. Rabbits can become quite large depending on the breed so be sure that the cage you choose will give the bunny lots of room to feel comfortable.
If you go for an indoor cage, you’ll need to use wood shavings or sawdust for the floor. This should be cleaned pretty frequently (every one to two days or so) so that your rabbit doesn’t become sick.
If planning to keep your furry friend outdoors, a solid wood rabbit hutch is a must. These are built to withstand the elements and also protect your pet from predators like your neighbours dog. In addition, for winter months you’ll want to cover the opening with a tarp, or some other warm material to protect from the cold. In summer time, you can cover the top with a material to stop rain from getting in, however, raise it a bit so that the suns warmth isn’t trapped inside causing heat stress that can be very harmful to rabbits.
Rabbits love vegetables, yes even carrots, so you should be feeding them those regularly. Also hay and grass are probably the biggest source of nutrition for rabbits, but you can also buy rabbit pellets from any pet store if you’re unsure that your pet is getting the nutrition it needs. Be sure to feed vegetables, hay and so on, in addition to the pellets if that’s the route you decide to go.
Taking care of a rabbit isn’t difficult and you can easily learn how to keep it happy and healthy. There are lots of books out there written specifically by experts that will teach you everything you need to know about proper bunny care. The one I’ve found to be a fantastic source of information, and easy to follow is called How To Raise Rabbits and I recommend it to any one that is new to owning bunnies or just wants to learn more.
